Interrail 2023 – 2. – Munich

Hallo!

Let’s start where we left off, alright?

Munich :

  • > 1,5 millions inhabitants, ~ 6 millions (metropolitan area)
  • Capital of Bavaria (CSU-FW)
  • Since 2020, the Grünen constitutes the largest group in the Stadtrat, Munich’s city council. The mayor is from the SPD
  • Hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics (and subsequently the 1972 Munich massacre)
  • Is hosting every year the well known « Munich security conference »

Thanks to the Deutsch Bahn, I got to arrive in the Bavarian capital two hours earlier than expected, which gave me the opportunity to explore on Wednesday evening already! I checked in at the hostel and went directly to see the city-center.

The touristic city-center was incredibly crowded, but the buildings were quite nice, and at least there was life. I went all the way up to Viktualienmarkt through Frauenplatz, and then came back to the hostel, taking my time to record as much as possible. I passed in front of some museum I didn’t get to visit, it’s going to be for next time ☺️!

Anyways, I was quite tired of my long travel day that I just cooked something and went to sleep.

München without beer??

The next day I decided to start by going to the Schloss Nymphenburg, a former summer residence for Bavarian leaders* and one of the most significant palaces in Europe.

*Bavaria has had electors, kings (thanks to Napoleon, amongst others), etc. The history of the Holy Roman Empire is actually really interesting!

Thereafter, I went for a walk in the garden (huge!) and kind of got lost…

Hei!

I then decided to go to Studentenstadt by train and go back to the hostel by foot through the Englischer Garten, (bigger than central park) which I did…

Anyways, quite a good walk! (That’s only part of it !)

This park was actually quite interesting : bigger than Central Park, its two parts have completely different vibes : in the northern part, I was almost alone, while the southern part was really crowded, with a lot of people sunbathing or taking a bath in the river.

I stayed at the hostel for the evening and met some people from Hungary, the US, the UK and Mauritius. (Although that’s not news, it does seem that talking about EU or economic policies often bores people. And I also use outdated words in English 😳😂).

If I had had more time, I would have gone to the Pinakothek and some other museums seemed really interesting, but it was already time to pack again, and I was really tired after over 34000 steps!

I am now currently on the train to Prague, if this one ever gets there, as it doesn’t seem like it as of now 😅…

I had asked for advice from a friend from my exchange year, which helped me a lot while making my « bucket list », thanks a lot once again, if you’re reading these lines 😉

Anyways, Danke und tschüss!

Jules
